Coffeetime Story

Stories from heart, that matters most!

Knowing team is more than names

“Knowing the team involves more than just learning their names.”

AK had initial interactions with his team and recognizes the value of understanding his team’s dynamics and building strong relationships. He decides to seek advice from GK during their coffee meet.

AK: “I realize that understanding my team is crucial for the successful delivery of the project. Any suggestions on how I can get started?”
GK: “Absolutely, AK. Knowing your team involves more than just learning their names. It’s about understanding their strengths, weaknesses, capabilities, preferences, and working styles.”

AK: “That makes sense. How do you recommend I go about it?”
GK: “Start by scheduling one-on-one meetings with each team member. Use this time to learn about their backgrounds, experiences, and career aspirations. Listen actively and show genuine interest in their perspectives. Apply formal and informal communication strategies to build rapport.”

AK: “Great idea! What else can I do to build trust and rapport with my team?”
GK: “Keep your communication open. Share your vision for the project, your expectations and challenges. Encourage feedback and create a safe space for your team members to voice their concerns and ideas. Be approachable!”

AK: “I’ll make sure of it. Is there anything else I should keep in mind?”
GK: “Empathy is key, AK. Put yourself in your team members’ shoes and try to understand their motivations and concerns. Show appreciation for their efforts and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small.”

AK: “Now, I feel more confident about building strong relationships with my team.”
GK: “Remember, knowing your team is an ongoing process. Stay proactive, be adaptable, and continue investing in your relationships. Your efforts will pay off in the long run.”
“Empowering your team is essential for project success.”

AK: “That’s a lot to understand! How do you simplify it?”
GK: “As a leader you should be able to listen to your team without hearing.”

AK: “Thanks for the valuable advice, GK.”
GK: “You’re welcome. By the way, other than team, there are key persons who can influence your project outcome. Next time, lets talk about identifying & engaging stakeholders!”
