Cultivating a Culture of Support: Embracing Empathetic Leadership

AK stepped out from his cabin and called up, “GK, Come on, let’s go for a walk”.

GK joined that program a few weeks ago on deputation through his parent company, and leading a small project team as a technical lead. AK is the program manager in that MNC.

AK: “You wanted to talk to me about something. What’s going on?”
GK: “Are you sure? Do you want me to continue as lead for this project?”

AK: “Why are you asking?”
GK: “I understand that there are few voices about me, a contractor functioning as PL and leading full-time employees.”

AK: “So?”
GK: “I don’t want that to impact on work.”

AK looked at GK deeply, checked the time, and said, “Grab your coffee, we have a meeting with other leads”.

With hesitation, GK followed AK to the meeting room as there was no answer yet from AK about his concern.

After concluding the meeting, AK asked GK to stay back.

AK: “I appreciate your observation and openness in communicating your concern and understand your worry about the impact on the projects’ environment and productivity.”
Continued, “I am aware that there are comments about it, although no one approached me yet. When the time comes, I will address if anyone raises their concern.”
AK: “Team, Work, Result, and Client Satisfaction are most important to me. Be it a full-time or a contractor, I would like to see the rightful person doing the best. You are an achiever and I will support you. Keep doing the good work.”

GK emerged from the conversation with a profound sense of clarity, a deep well of gratitude, and a newfound admiration for AK’s exceptional leadership and integrity. This encounter not only addressed his concerns but also illuminated a pathway to becoming a future leader.

At times we talk about cultivating a workplace culture that values meritocracy and embraces the contributions of every team member.
This exchange reflects the importance of empathetic leadership that helps enhance team dynamics and fosters a cohesive and collaborative work environment regardless of team members’ contract status.
